Game Idea Research

For this research I would like to base it on one of my previous game ideas form one of the previous blog posts. This Idea would be my First-person Fighting game.

A game mechanic I could like to delve into would be how to enhance the fighting combat in the game. This Idea is slow-motion; being able to move and attack on your accord and in anyway you'd like. I got this idea from being inspired by another game called 'Super Hot'.
This game was first built on the Unity engine as well, which entices me more on how to do it. It later got enhanced by the group making they're own engine for the games final release; It even got ported to VR and was a huge success.
I wanted to do this mechanic because in 'Super Hot', the slow-motion mechanic is mainly based on the gun mechanics and the ability to throw items around at enemies. I want to use it in my own way so that the slow-motion is used to move around enemies and select who they want to fight first. I feel that I can go somewhere with this as it can affect combat and just generally messing around with how it effects the story.

Another game mechanic I would like to try would be a point scoring system. Now this isn't your normal point system, I'm referring to the point system in the game 'Bullet Storm'.
In this game, Combo's and being just ridiculous with how you fight enemies is the best way to earn the most amount points the best and most fun way possible. For instance, An uppercut leading to a nut shot then a kick to the head could be called a 'triple head-shot' (pun intended).
And in 'Bullet Storm' these points are use to acquire more unique weapons, upgrades and new combos to work with. In this game, the story takes a back seat to the action but the characters talk about weird and sometimes uncalled for moves.
Another benefit to this is that I can put in a bunch of different moves and attacks and let the player string them together to create a fun and exciting way to play.

A final game mechanic I can think will work with my game idea world be having different classes to have different fighting styles and If I stretch the story enough, different abilities to do and follow up on combos to lengthen the combat and fun in the game.
A games that inspire me to do this is the 'Borderlands Series'. I love playing these games and really like how the action rolls. Each game has four base characters and each have different abilities to control the 'flow' of combat. And eventually they add more characters to change up the 'Meta', which is to say it completely changes on how to play the game.
This is also a factor in how the story moves as each character, given GearBox's humor, takes a pick at how tropes and how the story progresses. Like how they make fun of how old music in ear shattering-ly bad and how techno music is always the better choice, be the character young or old.

  1. Hey Shane, it's me, Nathan. Just read your post about your game idea and it sounds rather interesting. Taking inspiration from superhot seems like a good move as that game is rather unique within the 1st person shooter genre. Have to say Im really interested in what you have to offer and it seems you know what you want to do and have a clear vision, love it. The idea of taking bulletstorms unique combo system sounds really out there coupled with the different classes and weapons sounds like this game could be a solid one. Cant wait to see more, hope it goes well man.
